Community Question: Five Weeks of Homeschooling

Community Question is a category inspired by you. Here and there readers write in with questions that are better served by the varied, experiential knowledge of those who read and contribute in the comments. Please respond to this post in the comments, but if you have a question for the community email it to Heather.

The following question is from Annie S.

“We are in our fifth week of homeschooling and we have had our bumps along the way. I had imagined a relaxed, fun work schedule only to find that I may be pushing my children too hard right off the bat. With a 3rd- and 5th-grader we have been busy trying to figure out where they are in all of their subjects as it relates to our purchased books. We are all on edge though, coming from a public school environment where testing is constant, wondering when this feeling will go away.

First, is this normal for most new to homeschoolers, especially mid-year? Also, what is the best way to overcome the overwhelming feeling of a test lurking in the shadows? ”

Five weeks in and lots of questions. What encouragement or tips can you offer Annie?
